Dream d1987-s: Frost and Turning Mills

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came over the last rise before Brackensquare in the grey before proper dawn, and the town announced itself first as sound: the low rhythmic knock of mill-wheels turning, persistent as a heartbeat, carrying up the frozen road before we could see the walls.

Rurik stopped walking. He sat at the crown of the rise and watched the gate below with the amber patience he reserves for thresholds worth reading. The rest of us pulled up behind him.

The wall was stone and well-pointed, the fences along the outer fields laced with frost that caught what little grey light there was. Everything ordered. Even the road into the gate ran straight, the verge cut back and the drainage ditches clean. The Builder crouched and pressed two fingers to the road surface.

"Good compaction," she said. "No frost-heave. Someone tends this."

"The barometric reading has been stable for three days," the Weather Reader said, scanning her instruments. She wore the altimeter on her left wrist and the smaller barograph was clipped to her pack-strap. "The town sits in a hollow. Weather memory here will be different from the road - pooled, slow to change."

Lano's nose worked the cold air. Her tail moved in small measured beats, not the quick joy-wag of open country but something more considered. She took two steps forward, then looked back at me. I noted it in the book: the dog reads this place as interesting rather than safe. That is not the same thing.

The gate stood open. A lamp burned at each post, not for ceremony - the flame was low, fuel-saving, the kind left burning because the night-watch habit is kept rather than performed. A gatekeeper in a plain coat acknowledged us with a nod and returned to his ledger. No toll. No challenge. The kind of order that does not need to announce itself.

We passed through.

The main road within curved left past a covered market, locked until hour of trade, and a long hall with its doors propped open and smoke rising from its chimney. The sound of the mills was clearer now, coming from behind the market quarter, a water-source somewhere in the lower town.

I found us a room above a cooperage. The smell of shaved wood, resin, metal hoops. Rurik crossed the threshold and sat facing in. He does this to mark where the reading begins.

Lano curled against the wall. The Weather Reader hung her barograph on the nail by the window. The Builder said nothing, which meant she was already counting the rafters.

Tomorrow we walk the town properly. Tonight the book stays closed.
