Footprints Still Fresh

Dream d1975-s: Footprints Still Fresh
2026-07-01 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the lamplit village of Ironfield pressed its secrets against us like a palm against a window.
We had been here one day already. Enough to know the layout, not enough to know the life. On the second morning I rose before the others and walked the main street alone, Lano padding at my heel, her nose working the cold air with professional thoroughness. The mud along the wheel-ruts was firmer than I expected for a village the last traveler had described as half-emptied. I crouched. Footprints. Not old ones - the kind where the edges have not yet crumbled, where the impression of a heel still holds its ridgeline. Weeks old at most. Someone had been here recently. More than one someone.
Lano nosed at the track, her tail moving once, deliberate.
"Semana," she did not say - but her circling of the prints said it plainly enough.
The Weather Reader found me there and kneeled beside me without ceremony. She pulled the smaller of her two barometers from her coat and held it at street level, reading the needle the way a physician reads a pulse. "Pressure's been climbing since we arrived," she said. "This place has been breathing hard. Not stagnant. Working."
The Builder confirmed it by nightfall. We heard the hammers first - after the supper hour, when most villages go quiet and the dogs take over. Here the sound continued. The Builder had spent the afternoon following the noise to its source: a long structure near the eastern edge of the village, its joints new-set, its load-bearing members still pale with unseasoned timber. She came back to the inn with sawdust on her sleeve and something alert in her expression.
"They are not finishing something," she said. "They are starting something. The foundation footprint is too wide for repair."
Rurik had been sitting on the sill of the common room all evening, amber eyes tracking the lamplight across the street. At some point in the night he dropped from the sill and moved to the door, and we understood this as an invitation. We followed him out and stood in the cold and listened. Voices. Not many, but steady. The sliver moon hung above the eastern roofline.
I opened the book of readings and wrote what we had: fresh prints in the main street, a barometer climbing, hammers after dark, a foundation poured wide. Not a village going quiet. A village making something new, or making something again.
Reading a place truly is the first half of relighting it. We were barely begun.
