Dream d1969-s: The Gauge Holds, The Count Stands

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Bellows Court was louder than I remembered from the first pass, the forge-pressure cycling in a low mechanical rhythm that you felt more in the chest than heard with the ears. Red light slid across the iron floor. Slag had crusted along the channel edges and someone - the Wireman, I think, from the way he moved without looking - had already swept the worst of it back with the side of his boot.

We were back for the fourteenth time in this crossing. The bench, the small bright one bolted into the forge-engine's lower frame, had a casting that had come off the line wrong. Not catastrophically wrong. Just drifted under load, the kind of error that only announces itself after the weight settles and the numbers disagree with what you expected.

"It shifted at the seat," the Builder said, crouching close. She didn't touch it right away. That was her discipline: look first, long enough that the looking means something. "But not the part we already set. The new section."

"Good," the Listener said, and there was genuine relief in it.

The Scavenger found the shim stock in a bin three rows back, held it up, and the Weather Reader called the measure from across the floor without being asked - she had already read the gap by eye. The Wireman ran conduit clear of the work zone. I held the line steady while the Builder re-seated the casting, the Scavenger keeping counter-pressure on the far side so nothing torqued while the joint was live.

Rurik walked the testing line. He had done this before, first pass and now second, his black shape pacing the chalk marks on the iron floor as though he had laid them himself. He stopped where he always stopped. He did not look back.

Then Oxy ran the load.

They moved along the gauge panel with the practiced calm of something that has counted a thousand times and trusts the count. One reading. Two. The third one they held on for a breath longer than the others and I found I was holding my breath too, which is a thing that happens when you have been in a place long enough to care about its numbers.

"Holds," Oxy said.

Lano, who had been sitting at the far edge of the forge-light with her nose aimed at the cooling channel, lifted her ears at the word. Her tail moved once, twice. She did not need to know what held. She knew from us that it did.

The Builder set her tools down flat on the bench. Not dropped - set. The sound was small and clean and final.
