Phase 25: The Trash Lands and the Foundry
Dream d1965-s: The Second Reading of Red Light
2026-06-30 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Bellows Court came back to us before we had quite finished leaving it.
The forge-light had shifted. That was the first thing I noticed - not the clang or the heat-breath rolling up from the channel gratings, but the way the red fell differently across the gauge housings on the west wall. We had been here. We had read this place once. Now it wanted reading again.
The Builder saw it too. She stopped at the mouth of the court and tilted her head, the way she does when a structure is telling her something through its posture rather than its fittings. "The pressure's changed since yesterday," she said. "Something in the stack. The light goes redder when the draw is wrong."
The Weather Reader moved past her, stepping over a coil of dead conduit that lay where it had always lain, and held her palm out flat beside one of the cracked gauges. The needle sat a quarter-turn off from where I remembered it sitting. "Colder air on the intake side," she said. "There's weather coming down the chimney shaft from the east. You can smell it - wet iron and distance."
She was right. I could smell it.
Rurik dropped low and put his nose to the base of the forge wall, ears folded back. He said nothing. He rarely does here. The Foundry speaks a language that does not invite commentary, and he has learned to listen before offering his own.
The Wireman had already pulled a length of dead cabling from where it had draped across the bench and was examining the splice point. "This wasn't cut," he said. "This failed. There's a difference. Something ran too long under too much load."
The Scavenger stood back from the bench, watching the Wireman work, and I watched the Scavenger. He had a stillness here that had taken me a while to name. He knew how to be in a place without asserting that he owned it. A useful quality in a court where the forge has opinions.
Lano had found Oxy. They were together in the cool channel beside the bench - Oxy resting in the shadow of the gauge housing, Lano sitting upright at the channel's lip, ears forward, watching the axolotl with the attentive patience she brings to anything she has decided deserves watching.
The Listener stood behind me, saying nothing. I turned to look at him and he shook his head once, meaning: not yet, but soon.
We had been here before. We were here now. The court had held something back on the first pass, and the shifted light was its way of handing it over.

Note
A road's scent shifted from wood smoke to a sweet, refined residue, hinting at past fires. Rurik's presence, Lano's keen nose, and the discovery of a lost bolt symbolize the search for purpose amidst industrial waste.
