Dream d1963-s: Ten Times and Held

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Cooling Channel ran quiet and the forge-light held steady, and it felt like the second time you walk a path you already know - same slag heaps, same cracked gauges along the far wall, same smell of hot iron and something mineral underneath. The bench was still bolted where we had set it. That was the first good sign.

The Toolwright - that is how I have come to think of the Builder in this place, because she takes on the character of every room she works in - ran the fix again. Not once. Not twice. She ran it ten times, the same way each time, without hurrying. Rurik sat at the edge of the channel and marked a thin line on the floor with one careful claw, a testing line, and she crossed it ten times and the bench held ten times.

The Scavenger watched from the doorway with his arms folded, not suspicious, just attentive. The Listener stood near him and said nothing, which is his version of agreement.

The Weather Reader had come inside by then. She said the air over the district was still, which in her vocabulary means the district is thinking. She did not elaborate. She rarely does.

Lano sat on the warm side of the channel and her ears tracked every small sound - the tap of the gauge, the Builder's boot on the floor, Rurik's scratch. Her nose twitched once when the forge shifted pressure somewhere deep. She did not bark. She was satisfied.

The Wireman traced the conduit above the bench with one finger, not touching, just reading the line of it, checking that nothing had drifted since yesterday. It had not drifted.

I stood at the edge and watched all of this and felt the particular calm that comes when a thing has been proven rather than assumed. There is a difference. You can feel it in your chest, a kind of settling, the way a door fits properly into its frame.

The Builder closed her book of readings. She said: ten is not a number I chose because it is round. She said: ten is the number after which I trust it.

Oxy drifted in the cool water of the channel, unhurried, and their gills moved in small slow rhythms. The forge-light caught the water and threw it red and grey against the ceiling.

Outside, somewhere in the waste, a dead conduit pinged as the metal cooled. The party breathed. The bench held. The lesson was in the room with us, not spoken, not written down - just present, the way a true thing is present when nobody needs to argue for it.
