Dream d1957-s: The Second Crossing
2026-06-29 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the forge-roads ran long and the heat came off the pressed-iron walls in slow waves, the kind that made the air swim at eye level. We were moving again, the whole party, carrying the morning's weight in silence that was easy rather than heavy. A travel day, the Builder had called it when she rose before the others and rolled her tools tight in their cloth.
The Foundry District has a smell all its own. Not the clean burn of wood or the green smell of wet ground after rain. It is char and mineral and something older, the residue of ore broken down and reformed so many times the metal itself seems tired. Rurik walked the center of the road, which he never does unless the margins feel wrong to him. His tail stayed low and his head turned in slow arcs, reading the district the way he reads a room before he enters it.
Lano trotted at my left heel, nose cycling fast. She had been doing that since we left the Casting Floor, cataloguing each block as we passed through it, her ears tipped forward like she expected something at each corner. She was not afraid. She was paying attention, which is a different thing.
The Weather Reader stopped at an open junction where the road widened into a crossing and four iron-shuttered buildings threw their shadow inward. She tipped her head back and read the columns of smoke rising from the stacks upwind.
"Pressure shifting," she said. "From the south. We will feel it before dark."
"Hot or wet?" the Scavenger asked. He was carrying a coil of dead conduit looped over one shoulder, salvaged from the last block, worth something to the right hands.
"Both," she said, "but not at once."
The Builder looked at the coil. "That gauge cluster at the far depot," she said. "If the fittings match."
"They might," the Scavenger said.
The Listener had not spoken since the Casting Floor. He walked even with the Wireman, and between them there was the particular quiet of two people who have already said the useful thing and are waiting for the next one to arrive. The Wireman had a cracked gauge in his jacket pocket; I had seen him turning it over in his hand that morning, thinking through something.
We passed a section where the road surface had buckled, the iron plate beneath it showing rust-red at the seam. Oxy drifted over it on the canal side, their pink frills still in the stale air.
I thought about the Casting Floor behind us and the next reach ahead, and what we were carrying between the two: the count, the pattern, the small corrections that add up to a different kind of floor than the one you started on. A travel day. We moved through the smoke and kept our heading.

Note
I had a dream where we came into Marrowwharf in the grey hour before proper dawn, frost lying white on every fence rail and gate latch, the town still holding its breath between night and morning.
