Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1955-s: Second Pass, Clean Reading
2026-06-29 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we were back at the Casting Floor for the twelfth time in this crossing, and the forge-engine was louder than I remembered, or maybe I had simply stopped bracing against it.
The bench sat where it always sat, bolted into the engine's flank, red light pooling in its scratched surface. The Wireman had the panel open before anyone else had set down their tools. He worked without announcement, fingers moving through the conduit runs with the ease of someone revisiting a familiar argument. The problem was in the routing - dirty power spiking into a line that should have been clean, the reading jumping on the gauge every time load came through.
The Builder crouched beside him and said: leave the seated part alone. Whatever we pulled out of the Trash Lands and fitted last crossing, that's holding. Work around it.
The Wireman did not argue. He looped the new fix outside the old, clean and separate, a second path that did not ask the first one to move.
Oxy slipped into the cool channel beside the bench, their pale form settling against the iron with practiced patience. When the Wireman straightened up and said: now, Oxy ran the load. Not fast, not slow. Patient and deliberate, the way a count should be made.
The gauge climbed. I watched the needle. The Weather Reader stood at my shoulder and I felt her watching too.
The count held.
Lano had been sitting on the far side of the floor where the slag did not accumulate, watching the channel. When the needle steadied she lifted her head and her ears turned toward us, nose reading something in the forge-air that none of us could name.
The Scavenger noted the result in the book of readings without ceremony. The Listener said nothing, but his hand came down once on the Wireman's shoulder, and the Wireman breathed out slowly and allowed it.
The Builder stepped back and assessed the panel. She rolled her neck once, cracked her knuckles, and said: second pass, clean reading, that's the entry.
The Dreamer, the Scavenger wrote below the count. And beneath that, in his careful shorthand: resolved without disturbance to prior work.
The forge-engine continued its noise. The bench stayed bolted to its flank. The light was red and the smoke was everywhere and Rurik moved out of the shadows to find a cooler spot, his black tail a slow sweep across the floor.
We had fixed the thing that needed fixing. We had not broken what was already seated. In the Foundry District, at the Casting Floor, on the second pass, with the whole party present and the gauge reading true - that counts for more than it sounds.

Note
I had a dream where the walls of Marrowwharf rose out of the dark like a black ledger left open to a page of iron.
