Dream d1953-s: The Gauge That Would Not Hold

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came back to the Casting Floor on the second pass, and the air tasted different the second time - less like anticipation, more like a question we had already asked once and not understood the answer to.

The gauges were still wandering. That was the first thing I noticed. Yesterday we had put it down to heat-bloom, to the furnace cycling, to any of a dozen explanations that let you go to sleep without worry. Now the needles drifted as we watched them, a slow unhurried oscillation that had no business being there.

The Builder crouched at the first joint coupling, her ear pressed to the iron as if the metal might confess. She worked down the row without speaking, her hands reading what her eyes could not, pressing thumbs into seams, feeling for the give that signals a fault inside the fitting.

The Weather Reader stood at the pressure column with her book open, one finger on a line from two hours back. She had been tracking the stack exhaust all morning and I could see by the set of her shoulders that the numbers were not adding up. "The pressure's not dropping the way a blockage would drop it," she said finally, to no one in particular. "And it's not rising the way a feed surge would raise it. It's doing something I don't have a word for."

The Scavenger moved between the discard piles with quiet certainty, turning pieces over, setting some aside and leaving others. He found a segment of outlet sleeve with a hairline scored along its length, held it up to the forge-light, put it in his vest.

Oxy floated in the cool gauge-channel beside the main instrument board, their pale form almost still, gills moving with slow patience. They were watching a single needle. Not the wandering ones. A smaller gauge, lower on the panel, one I had walked past twice without seeing it as significant.

Rurik sat on the bench with his tail curled around his paws, watching Oxy watch the gauge. He did not offer a theory. He had been in foundries before and knew that sometimes the floor tells you the problem only when you stop trying to find it.

The Wireman and the Listener had gone up the gantry to check the secondary feeds. Lano sat beside me at the main board, ears forward, nose working at the metal-and-coal smell of the place. She glanced up when I looked down at her. No answer there either, just the same patient attention the rest of us were trying to hold.

I wrote down what the Weather Reader had said. A thing with no word for it still needs a record.
