Dream d1951-s: The Light Falls Elsewhere Now

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came back to the Casting Floor and it was not the same room.

Nothing had moved. The bench was where we had left it, bolted at its slight tilt above the cool channel, and the gauges on the far wall still showed their cracked faces. The slag lines on the floor ran the same directions. But the forge-light had shifted in the hours since our first crossing, dropping from the high vents at a different angle, and where it fell now it illuminated a section of the wall we had walked past without a second thought.

The Builder stopped first. She stood with her hands at her sides, reading something I could not yet see.

"It's a draft," she said. "Scored into the iron. Whoever worked this station left a working note."

The Wireman came up beside her. "That's not a note. That's a correction." He traced a line with one finger, not touching the metal, hovering above it the way someone checks whether a surface is still hot. "Someone came back and scored through the first version and wrote another below it. Look at the depth difference."

The Weather Reader had been watching the draft from the high vents while we walked. She said the air was pulling inward, pressure reading as overcast and still for the next stretch, which in the Foundry District meant the furnaces were cycling low. Good time to look. Bad time to work.

Lano trotted along the wall, nose low against the slag-stained floor. Rurik walked directly to the center of the illuminated section and sat, tail wrapped around his feet, and regarded the scored iron as though he had been waiting for us to notice it.

The Scavenger crouched near the base of the wall where the corrections were deepest. He had a way of finding the place where the most effort had been spent. "The first version assumes a fixed pour rate," he said. "The second one doesn't. Whoever made the change learned something between the two."

The Listener said nothing. He stood to one side and I watched his attention move across the text in the methodical way he processed long documents, left to right, pausing at the corrections.

I moved closer to the bench and looked at the cool channel beside it. There were marks there too, older, half-filled with scale. The Casting Floor had been written on more than once by more than one hand. We had walked through an argument the first time and not known it.

"We need to copy this," the Builder said. "The whole section."

"The light won't hold," the Weather Reader answered. "We have maybe an hour."

We got to work.
