Dream d1937-s: The Gauge Walk, Again

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we turned back along the Gauge Walk, and the forge-light fell at a different angle than it had before.

That is what the Weather Reader said first: not that the light had changed, but that the angle was different. She stopped in the middle of the iron walkway and tilted her face toward the heat, reading it the way she reads a cloud mass, as information. "The fire shifted west," she said. "The core is burning lower on one side." The Wireman, walking beside her, looked where she looked and nodded without speaking.

We had been here. We knew this stretch of pipe and cracked ceramic, the gauges bolted to the wall at chest height, their needles still and stopped, their faces soot-darkened. I knew the particular smell: iron and old char and something sulfurous bleeding through a seam in the floorplate. I knew the bench, too, the small bright one bolted into the side of the forge-engine, and I knew Oxy curled in the cool channel below it, watching us come back with their wide, patient gaze.

But the Foundry has more than one pass to give.

The Builder moved to the gauges first. She ran her hand across the face of the tallest one, clearing soot with her sleeve, and leaned in close. "This one read high, last time," she said. "It's tracking lower now. The pressure is moving somewhere."

"Where does pressure go?" the Listener asked, from the back of the group. He has a way of asking questions that don't sound like questions.

"Into work," she said. "That's the whole point."

Rurik walked the perimeter, as he does, paws quiet on the iron grating, his black shape crossing and recrossing the red-and-grey light. He paused at a conduit junction we had not examined before, a dead section of it, cold and sealed, but sealed deliberately, with care. He sat beside it and looked back at the group, and that was enough.

The Scavenger moved toward it, crouching low. He has the habit of checking the seals, reading them for intention rather than for damage. He found the intent here almost immediately. "Someone closed this on purpose," he said. "Not to stop something. To save it."

Lano sat between the bench and the wall, nose working, ears forward. She was reading something else entirely, some layer of the place that none of us have the instrument for.

The forge breathed. The light held its angle.

We were back, and the Gauge Walk was not done with us.
