Dream d1934-s: The Bench Holds True
2026-06-28 00:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we were back in the Forge Hall for the ninth crossing of this residency, and the red light had the familiar quality of a place you know well enough to stop noticing it. Smoke curled past the hanging chains. The forge-engine breathed its low, continuous pressure through the floor and up through the soles of my boots.
The bench had drifted under load. Not much - a hairline of misalignment, the kind that only shows when you push the gauge to full - but the Wireman had caught it on the last pass and marked it with a chalk scratch. He stood over it now with his arms crossed, not worried, just considering.
"It's the thermal expansion," the Builder said, already crouching beside the joint, her hands reading the metal the way the Weather Reader reads cloud-edge. "The upper saddle's pulling. The lower mount is fine. We don't touch the lower mount."
"We don't touch the lower mount," the Wireman agreed, and there was something warm in the repetition, a shared rule confirmed between people who had made the same mistake in an earlier life and learned from it.
The Scavenger passed the Builder a tool from the rack without being asked. The Listener leaned against the conduit housing and watched with the particular quality of attention he brought to everything - not helping yet, but ready. Rurik had found a warm patch of floor near the secondary flue and settled into it with the dignified indifference of a cat who has chosen his throne and will not be moved.
Lano stood in the cool channel cut into the forge-floor for exactly this purpose, her white coat catching the red light, ears soft, nose sorting the air. She watched the Builder work with the steady faith of an animal that has learned the difference between things that are fixed and things that merely look fixed.
It took less time than the first pass had. That was the nature of a second crossing - you knew which questions had already been answered.
Oxy ran the load up past the gauge mark, holding at full for a long count. The needle climbed and steadied. It held.
"Count holds," Oxy said.
The Weather Reader looked up from the corner where she had been logging the crossing. "The barometric reading was cleaner today too. Pressure difference at the east vent is down."
Nobody celebrated. That was not the Forge Hall's way. The Listener nodded once. The Wireman erased the chalk scratch with his thumb. The Builder stood and rolled her shoulders and looked at the bench the way you look at something that has returned to being exactly what it was supposed to be all along.
The forge-engine breathed. The bench held true. Lano stepped out of the channel and shook herself once, quietly satisfied.
