Dream d1931-s: The Bench, The Stay

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we crossed back into the Forge Hall a second time, and this time we did not cross through it. This time we stopped.

The heat came at us the same way it always had - not as a wall but as a presence, a slow weight settling into cloth and skin, the smell of hot iron and old smoke rising from the floor grates. The forge-light painted everything in red and grey, the kind of red that does not flicker so much as pulse, slow and deliberate, like something breathing at the center of the building.

The bench was where it had been. Bolted directly into the flank of the engine, which was itself a permanent thing, part of the floor and the walls and the ceiling all at once. Someone had set it there knowing it would never leave. The metal was worn smooth at the seat, the edges rounded by years of weight. A book of readings lay open on the ledge beside it, pages soft with heat and handling.

The Weather Reader moved to the door and stood with her back to us a moment, reading the waste outside. The sky past the threshold was the colour of old gauze. She said, this is where the pressure holds. She said it like a measurement, not a verdict.

Oxy had found the cool channel that ran along the base of the engine wall and settled there, watching us from the low place, their pale shape quiet against the dark iron. Lano padded along the channel's edge, nose down, curious about what Oxy had already settled among.

Rurik jumped to the bench first. He turned twice, considering it, then sat with his tail curled over his front paws and looked at the Wireman as if the question had already been asked and answered.

The Wireman set his pack down. The Builder set her pack down beside his. They did not say anything. The Scavenger looked at the cracked gauges along the engine wall, one after the other, reading them with a kind of professional patience.

The Listener was quiet, which was how he told you that something felt right.

I set my pack down too. The bench was warm under my hand when I touched it. The engine underneath it made a low, uninterrupted sound, something between a hum and a groan, the sound of a thing that has been working so long it has forgotten how to stop.

We were staying. The Forge Hall had been a place we passed through. Now it was ours to learn.
