Dream d1927-s: The Gauge Holds

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Tempering Range ran red and the air tasted of scale and hot iron, and I stood at the edge of the testing floor watching the others work.

The casting had come off the line wrong - not the part we had brought up from the Trash Lands, which sat clean and already-seated in its channel, but a new one, pressured too fast through the final draw and bowed just enough to throw the load. The Builder found it by running her fingers along the seam. She did not say anything for a moment. Then she said, "Here. The shoulder drifted."

The Wireman crouched beside her and pulled the shim gauge from his belt. He pressed it flat against the joint and shook his head slowly. "Four thousandths. Maybe five."

"We do not touch the seated part," the Builder said, and that was the whole rule. She said it quietly, the way you state a thing that does not need argument.

So they worked around it. The Scavenger fed the casting back under heat at an angle while the Listener kept his hand on the frame and called the sound - a low hum that changed pitch when the metal moved right. The Weather Reader stood at the far post and read the ambient off a cracked gauge on the wall, the needle barely alive but enough. She adjusted the draft twice. Neither time did she explain why, and no one asked.

Rurik marked the testing line himself, pacing it out across the floor in slow deliberate strides, one paw after another, his tail held low and serious. The line mattered. It was where we would know.

Oxy ran the load. They moved to the gauge panel at the end of the range, their gills fanning gently in the heat, and they read the numbers aloud as the load came up: "Forty. Sixty. Eighty." A pause. "Ninety-two. Holding."

Lano sat just off the line, nose working at the hot air, ears forward. Her tail moved once when Oxy said holding.

The count held. The fix was the fix.

We stood there for a moment in the red forge-light, smoke curling up through the grate overhead, the old slag-brick warm at our backs. The Builder pressed her palm flat against the casting and nodded. The Wireman wrote something in the book of readings. Not much. A line, maybe two.

Outside the range the rest of the Foundry ticked and breathed around us, iron cooling, pressure easing. We had not solved everything. We had solved this one. The gauge held and the already-seated part stayed seated and that was the count we needed.
