Measure Adrift at Bellows Court

Dream d1912-s: The Measure Wanders Home
2026-06-26 11:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Bellows Court swallowed sound the wrong way.
We had crossed into the forge-district proper, past the dead conduit lines and the cracked pressure gauges that lined the approach like a row of broken clocks, and the Court opened before us - a vaulted chamber of iron and slag, red forge-light pooling in the low places, the smell of old combustion thick in the throat. The small bright bench was there, bolted to the engine housing just as we had been told it would be. The pale shape in the cool channel beside it was still and patient.
Then the frequency hit.
I cannot name it properly. Not a sound exactly - more a resonance that moved through the floor and up through the soles of my feet and into the chest, and everything it touched began to drift. The Wireman held up his hand and we all stopped. His head was tilted, listening.
"The count is off," he said. "Something down in the bellows housing. A frequency eating the measure."
The Builder had already crossed to the bench. She ran her palm along its face, pressed her ear to the iron surface the way someone leans against a door to hear what's on the other side. Rurik padded to the testing line on the floor - some earlier maker had scored it into the stone with chalk or claw - and sat there precisely, marking where the resonance was loudest.
"Here," he said, without moving.
The Weather Reader pulled her instrument from her pack and began to read. She spoke the count aloud as she caught it, or tried to: three, four, three again, something that wasn't five. Lano circled the bench once at a trot, ears flat and intent, nose to the seam where the bench bolted to the engine housing. She stopped and pressed her nose to one bolt in particular and held there.
"She's found the loose coupling," the Scavenger said. He crouched beside her, pulled a wrench from his belt, and started to turn.
The Listener stood at the edge of the Court with his eyes closed. "Give me the count," he said. "Keep speaking it." The Weather Reader spoke; he listened; the Wireman began to hum against the resonance, hunting for the note that would cancel it. Oxy settled into the cool channel beside the pale shape and held very still, their frilled edges moving like a slow breath, a second counter against the drift.
It took time. The false frequency faded in degrees, not all at once. When the measure finally held true, the Wireman exhaled a long breath and the Builder looked up from the bench with something close to a smile.
The count was ours again.

Note
A group walks the thin, grey road between Kestrelfold and Cinderfold, their path marked by the Weather Reader's warning of an adrift frequency. Together, they repair a resonance chamber, finding a way to restore balance and harmony.
