Dream d1893-s: Ten Times and Holding
2026-06-25 04:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Conduit Yard smelled of iron-scale and old rain, and the forge-light threw red across every surface like a wound that had decided to become warmth instead.
We had gathered at the bench. The Toolwright - that is what we were calling the Wireman here, in this place where his hands knew every fitting - was running the same test again. Not because he doubted the fix. Because that is not what trust is. Oxy lay in the cool gauge-channel beside the bench, their gills fanning slow, watching the needle on the pressure dial with the patience of something that has learned to read water.
The Scavenger sat on a slag-block with his knees up, watching with the particular attention of someone who has repaired things in worse conditions and knows the difference between a man showing off and a man making sure. The Listener stood just back of his shoulder, saying nothing, which with him is its own kind of comment.
The needle climbed. Held. Climbed again. Held again.
"That's seven," said the Builder, marking her book without looking up. Her voice had the flat warmth of a teacher who already knows the student has it but will not say so yet.
The Weather Reader had her back to the gauge entirely, reading the air above the yard. "There is a pressure front moving down from the northern pipes," she said. "Real weight. Not conduit-weight."
"Eight," the Builder said.
Lano had found a warm grate-cover near the wall and was curled on it, one ear tilted toward the bench. Her nose twitched twice when the pressure spiked on the ninth run, as if she had registered a sound none of us heard.
Nine. The needle climbed, held, settled. The Toolwright reset the coupling and stood up straight for the first time in an hour, rolling his shoulder once.
"Ten," said the Builder, and closed her book.
Nobody cheered. Nobody needed to. The Scavenger gave a single short nod, the kind that means: I would stake my kit on that now. The Listener sat down on a crate. Rurik, who had been moving silently along the perimeter of the yard the whole time, paused and looked back at us, his black coat picking up the forge-red, and then resumed his circuit.
I stood in the heat and the smell of pressure-sealed pipe and thought about what it means to trust a thing. Not when it is new. Not when it has passed once. When it has been asked to hold under real weight, again and again, and has not flinched.
Oxy turned once in the channel, settled, and went still.
The yard was quiet except for the forge and the distant weather coming in.

Note
Noon descended on Slatewharf like a hammer-fall, pressing blue sky against frosty stone. Builder meticulously tested a repaired coupling ten times, each thread biting clean. Discipline held, cold honesty in the air.
