Ten at the Gauge Walk

Dream d1886-s: Ten Times, Then Trust
2026-06-24 14:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Gauge Walk stretched before us like a sentence someone had stopped mid-word and never finished. The iron grating underfoot rang hollow, and the forge-light from the great engine threw everything into red and shadow. Smoke moved through the hall in slow, purposeful columns, as if even the air here had a job to do.
The Toolwright was at the bench again.
That was the thing about this place - the bench was always occupied. It was bolted directly into the forge-engine's housing, close enough that you could feel the pressure changes in your ears when the combustion cycle peaked. He had a gauge in his hands, the same one from yesterday's correction, and he was running the sequence. Again. Not because he doubted the fix, but because doubt was not the point. The point was repetition under real load.
"Six," said the Wireman, watching from the far side of the channel with his arms crossed.
"Seven," the Toolwright answered, not looking up.
Lano lay in the cool channel that ran alongside the bench, her white fur tinted orange in the forge-glow. Her ears tracked the sound of the gauge's needle, that faint tick at true-zero, with the patience of something that understood verification without needing to name it.
The Weather Reader read the air currents near the intake vent. "Still dry," she said. "Pressure holding. Good conditions for exact work."
The Builder had her back against the engine housing, one hand flat on the iron, feeling for vibration. She nodded slowly, which meant what she felt matched what she expected.
I watched the Toolwright run the sequence an eighth time. A ninth. Rurik sat on a high pipe fitting nearby, tail looped, watching with amber eyes that missed nothing and reported nothing. The Scavenger had found a cracked coupling near the west wall and was turning it in his quick hands, studying the fracture line the way you study a wrong answer to understand what the right one cost.
The Listener stood still, simply present, holding the count in the room without speaking it.
The tenth pass completed. The needle touched zero and held.
The Toolwright set the gauge on the bench with a quietness that was itself a statement. He did not say the word trust. He did not need to. It was already in the room - in the bench, in the book of readings open beside it, in the smoke that passed through in its purposeful columns overhead.
Oxy surfaced briefly from the channel beside Lano, regarded the bench, regarded the gauge, and slipped back under without ceremony.
Outside, the waste lay still. We were not yet moving. The learning was the day's work, and it had held.
