Dream d1884-s: The Gauge Walk, Uneven
2026-06-24 11:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Gauge Walk stretched ahead of us like a sentence with something wrong in the middle - iron grating over a channel of cooling water, red forge-light coming up between the slats, and a long bench bolted to the side of the main pressure line where the count was supposed to be taken.
Oxy drifted ahead, slipping into the cool channel alongside the bench, their gills catching the faint ripple of the water. The rest of us stood at the near end and looked at what we had.
"It sags," the Builder said, not complaining, just naming it. She crouched and ran her hand along the bench's edge. One side had settled into itself, the mounting bracket giving half a centimetre that should not have been there. "The load comes in uneven and the gauge reads the uneven load as the truth. Everything we count here is off."
The Weather Reader checked her notes and shook her head. "The variance is small but it compounds. Three hundred passes and you are measuring something you invented."
Rurik walked the length of the bench without hurry, black against the red light, his tail low and steady. He stopped at the far bracket and pressed his shoulder against it experimentally. "It is the weld," he said. "Old weld on a cold day. It gave a little and nobody caught it."
Lano padded the perimeter of the whole walk twice, nose close to the grating, ears tipped forward. She sat at the low corner and looked back at us - that direct, unhurried look she had, the one that said she had already found the point and was waiting for us to arrive.
The Wireman had a bar in his kit, not long, just enough. The Listener held the frame while the Wireman worked the bracket back to true, describing what he was feeling in the metal as he went - a steady, quiet narration that helped all of us understand the joint before it was closed. The Scavenger braced from the underside, half-hanging over the channel, one hand gripping a guide rail.
The Builder watched the gauge needle as they worked. "Stop," she said once. Then: "A breath more." Then: "There."
We ran a count together, the whole party, passing a test load down the bench and reading the gauge at each station. The Weather Reader called the numbers and I wrote them into the book. They were clean.
Oxy surfaced in the channel, blinked up at the corrected bracket, and slipped back under without ceremony.
The bench was level. The walk was open. The count could be trusted again.
