Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1882-s: Leave to Stay
2026-06-24 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Gauge Walk opened before us like a held breath finally let out. The heat came first, a pressure against the face before the light even changed, and then we were inside it: red forge-glow washing the iron columns, smoke coiling in slow ropes toward vents that had been bleeding the same air for decades. The gauges on every wall read something. Whether they read true was another matter.
The Weather Reader stopped at the threshold and pressed two fingers to the nearest pipe. She did not need to announce what she found. The temperature here wrote its own report against the skin.
"Still pressurized," she said. "The system is alive."
Rurik moved ahead of us. He found the bench first, the small bright one bolted directly into the flank of the forge-engine, unmovable, permanent, a decision someone made long before we arrived. He stepped onto it and sat, tail wrapping once around his feet, and looked back at the party with the particular expression of a black cat who has already decided something and is waiting for the rest of us to catch up.
The Builder ran her hand along the engine casing. The creak of it, the warmth through the iron, the faint vibration of something still cycling deep in the mechanism. She did not say what she felt. She nodded once.
Oxy slid along the cool channel beside the bench, the pale shape of them moving in the low water that collected along the forge floor. The Wireman crouched to check the channel's depth, found it sound, and stood again.
The Scavenger turned a broken gauge housing over in his hands, studying it. The Listener stood very still near the far wall, learning the room's particular silence underneath all its noise.
Lano pressed her nose to the base of the forge-engine. Her ears went up. She sneezed once, sharply, at the sulfur, then shook herself and sat down beside the bench as though the matter were settled.
It was, perhaps, the Dreamer who said it first, or perhaps it was the bench itself that said it by existing here, bolted and certain. We looked at each other across the forge-light and the slowly moving smoke.
"We'll stay," I said.
Nobody argued. The Builder was already reading the fittings. The Wireman had found the conduit run along the east wall. The Scavenger set the broken gauge on the bench like an offering, or a first task.
The Foundry received us. The gauges kept their readings. The fire held its breath and did not go out.
