Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1878-s: The Gauge Holds
2026-06-24 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Forge Hall was louder than I remembered, a low pressure-hum that you felt in your back teeth before you heard it with your ears. Red forge-light threw long shadows off every strut. The cool channel ran along the eastern wall, and Oxy settled into it without ceremony, their pale outline just visible beneath the surface, gills working in slow, steady arcs.
"The frequency is still off," the Wireman said. He had his ear against the bench housing, eyes closed. "Not wrong the way it was wrong before, but pulling wide."
The Builder already had the panel open. She passed tools backward without looking, and the Scavenger caught each one and set it in order on the floor beside her, quiet and efficient - a language they had worked out between them over the last several crossings without ever naming it.
Lano circled the base of the forge-engine twice, nose low to the grating, then sat and looked at the Wireman with her ears forward.
"She smells the old routing," the Weather Reader said. "The path it wants to run and the path it is running."
"They agree now," the Wireman said, and stood back.
The Builder fitted the salvaged part - a throttle collar, matte with careful re-threading - and the Listener held the housing steady while she seated it, both of them leaning into the work without speaking. The hum shifted. Not gone, but resolved, like a word finally pronounced correctly.
Rurik jumped up onto the bench frame and lay along the top strut, tail hanging, watching.
"Smug," the Scavenger said.
"Accurate," Rurik said.
I helped re-route the clean power feed, following the Wireman's directions, my hands learning the path as I went - here the junction, here the ground point, here the place where the old conduit had been crimped and forced the signal wide. We straightened what could be straightened and bypassed what could not.
Lano circled one more time, then curled against the base of the channel, close enough to Oxy that the cool water reached her paws.
"All right," the Builder said. "Run it."
Oxy surfaced just enough to rest their chin on the channel lip, watching the gauge. The Wireman brought the load up slowly. The needle climbed, and we watched it, all of us still, and it climbed past the first mark and the second and settled, trembling, just inside the green band.
It held.
"The count holds," the Weather Reader said.
Outside, she had read the weather coming in: low pressure, the kind that arrives clean after a long drag of heat. It suited the hall. It suited us.
