Dream d1876-s: Carrying the Answer

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Forge Hall spoke in a frequency below sound. Not vibration exactly, something in the bone, in the sternum, a resonance that made the red forge-light seem to shiver and the iron floor hum at a pitch no one could name aloud. We entered through the low arch and the heat found us immediately, and with it the smell: charred iron, old smoke, the mineral tang of compressed air.

The Builder moved first. She went to the joints where the bright bench frame met the forge-engine body, pressing her palms flat against the seams, reading what the metal held. "The anchor's drifted," she said, no alarm in it, just the even note of someone naming what is true. "The whole thing's been rocking on a bad mount. A long time, probably. Something is working free underneath."

The Weather Reader had her hand out, fingers spread, reading pressure the way she reads a sky before rain. "The heat's uneven," she said. "Cold pocket at the forge-mouth. That's where the frequency bleeds. Something upstream is failing."

The Scavenger was already at the discard-piles along the east wall. He worked fast, crouched low, striped tail raised for balance, turning pieces over in clever hands. He picked up, put back. Picked up, pocketed. The discard-piles held their own kind of record if you knew how to read them, and he did.

Oxy stood beside the gauge, hand not quite touching the cracked glass face, watching the needle's small tremble. "The measure is drowning," they said quietly. "It's trying to find something it cannot reach. The signal exists. The instrument won't hold it."

Rurik had drawn a line in the forge-floor dust with one careful claw and now walked it slowly, the way a cat marks territory and takes readings in the same motion. He stopped at the hall's center and sat. Lano padded after him, nose low, ears pricked forward, tracking the same current he'd found in the floor.

I had the salvaged piece under my arm, wrapped in cloth. We'd pulled it from the slag three nights back and none of us had known why yet.

Now I watched the Builder's hands trace the gap in the bench's anchor bolts, and I understood. The shape was right. Not almost right. Right.

The Wireman came to crouch beside me. "You see it," he said.

"I think we've been carrying the answer," I said.

He looked at the bench. "We just hadn't found the question yet."

Across the hall, the Listener turned his head in the small particular way that meant: now. This is the moment. We are close.

The gauge needle settled for the first time since we'd entered.
