Dream d1874-s: The Forge Hall Reads

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Forge Hall opened ahead of us like a decision already made. The light in here leaned differently than it had in the bench chamber -- redder, pressed low against the iron floor, catching every ridge and rivet in a way that made the room look like it was still being built.

Rurik went first, which is his habit when he smells something electric. He moved along the inner wall with his tail low and his attention absolute, stopping at each dark conduit to nose at the junction boxes, reading the hall the way he reads everything: touch before theory.

The Builder stopped in the threshold and looked up. The rafters here were load-bearing in a serious way, every beam doubled, and she worked through the geometry of it quietly, lips moving. "Whatever they pressed here was heavy," she said. "Heavier than anything we've seen in the district." She was not troubled by this. She was pleased.

The Weather Reader crouched at a cracked gauge mounted to the near pillar. The face was fogged with condensation and she breathed on it once, wiped it with her sleeve, and read it with the calm patience she brings to instruments that have not been asked anything in a long time. "Pressure cycling," she said. "Not random. There's a pattern in the residue."

Lano walked the cool channel along the base of the forge-engine, nose working, ears up. She paused at a seam in the iron where the forge-light pooled thinnest and sat down there, watching. She did not bark. She just watched the seam.

The Scavenger had already drifted toward the far workbench, hands loose at his sides in that unhurried way that means he has already seen something worth considering. He turned the salvaged piece over in his fingers without removing it from the wrapping, testing its weight. "There is a receiver housing on this bench," he said, with the specific quiet of someone not yet ready to celebrate. "I won't say it matches until I set it down."

I moved with him and we set it down together.

It matched.

The bench coupling accepted the salvaged piece without persuasion, the way a door accepts a key that was cut for it. A low sound came up through the iron floor, felt more than heard, and the forge-light in the hall steadied and deepened and the cracked gauge on the pillar swung, just fractionally, toward a number.

Lano lifted her head from the cool channel. Her tail moved once.

The Forge Hall had been waiting for us to bring it the right part. We had not known we were carrying it for exactly this. But the hall knew.
