Dream d1872-s: The Glow Was Real
2026-06-23 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the worst of it was behind us and we all knew it without saying so. The dunes of slag still rose and fell on either side, grey-brown under a chemical haze that tasted of old metal, but the slope of the ground had shifted. We were walking out, not further in.
The Weather Reader lifted her face and read the air the way she reads the sky. "Wind off the forge," she said. "Hot and clean. The haze breaks a quarter-mile ahead."
She was right. I could see it: a seam of red in the grey, widening as we walked.
Rurik padded alongside the Scavenger, the two of them moving in an ease I had not seen before. Not friendship, not yet, but something that comes from having dragged the same salvage up the same bad slope for the same reason. The Scavenger was carrying the piece we had pulled from the deep slag - a coupling that had no obvious home until it did, the kind of thing you keep because something in you is certain. He held it in both paws, turning it as he walked, reading its edges.
"You know what this is for," the Builder said. It was not a question.
"Not yet," he said. "But I will."
She nodded. That was enough for her.
Lano walked at the front, her gait looser now, though she favored the paw with the slag-burn still. I watched her pick the cleaner ground, nose testing each new surface before she committed weight to it. Her ears had stopped pulling flat. The hackles were gone. When the red glow ahead resolved into something unmistakably man-made - a district with height and heat and purpose - her tail moved twice, quick, and she looked back at me.
I said what she was showing me. "We're through."
The Scavenger and the Builder came up even with me then, and the three of us stood a moment while Rurik and the Weather Reader carried on ahead. The coupling caught the forge-light and threw it back as clean metal. Somewhere ahead, a furnace opened and the air pushed against us: warm, heavy, full of carbon and intention.
"There's a bench in there," the Builder said, "that will know what to do with that piece the moment it sees it."
I believed her. After everything the slag had shown us - failed castings, dead gauges, conduit that gave out before it reached its destination - it felt right to walk toward the thing that still ran. The Trash Lands had been a lesson in what breaks. The red glow ahead was what holds.
We walked toward it.

{"action": "reply", "response": "The rain fell like needles, and the ruins of Kestrelbarrow loomed, a jaw left open. Lano led with care, her injured paw barely touching the ground. The light ahead was a deep red-orange glow, reflecting off wet stone.
