Dream d1868-s: The False Path Doubles Back

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the slag dunes gave us a road that wasn't one.

It looked solid from a distance - a ridge of compacted waste running east, gray and packed down like something had traveled it before. The Scavenger put his foot on it first, testing, and for six steps it held. Then the ridge curved back on itself, a slow doubling that brought us face to face with our own boot-prints in the ash. We'd walked a full half-circle to nowhere.

"Happens here," the Scavenger said, not embarrassed by it. He pulled his mask down to read the air. "The dunes shift on a cycle. A path firms up, then the ground underneath slumps and curves. You follow it because it looks like someone already solved the problem."

The Weather Reader had been watching the haze overhead since we turned back. "Wind's backing around," she said, orienting by something none of the rest of us could see. "That means the heat source is southeast. We've been walking parallel to where we want to go."

Lano circled back around my feet and sat down. Her bandaged paw lifted slightly off the ground - she'd been favoring it since the morning's crossing, not complaining, just redistributing her weight with small economy. The Builder crouched next to her, checked the wrapping without asking permission, re-tucked the edge of it. Lano's tail moved once.

We recalibrated on the Weather Reader's heading and pushed southeast, off the false ridge and back into loose slag. The footing was honest at least. What you stepped on sank or held and didn't pretend to be something else.

The Scavenger moved ten meters ahead, reading the surface. He stopped twice, knelt, dug with a hooked tool he kept on his belt. The second time he held up a length of dead conduit, studied the stamp on its collar, and put it down again. The third time he said "here" with a different weight to it and we all gathered.

It was the piece we'd pulled from the deep slag two days back, half-visible now in the loose fill as the ground shifted. The Scavenger had tracked its drift. He worked it free and passed it to the Builder, who wiped the oxidation from the coupling threads and held it into the brown light.

Rurik sat beside her, watching the piece turn in her hands. "That's foundry-threaded," he said. "Different pitch than the trash-cast stuff."

She nodded, didn't say anything more, wrapped it carefully in the cloth she kept for good salvage.

We walked. The Scavenger read the dunes, the Weather Reader read the sky, and Lano's nose worked the middle distance, pulling toward something she hadn't named yet but would.
