Dream d1856-s: Known Before Named

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano stopped.

Not the slow halt of a dog finding a scent worth following, but a sudden freeze, all four paws planted in the slag crust, hackles drawn straight from her shoulders to her tail. I had been watching the Weather Reader trail her fingers along a dead conduit, reading what the residue of old air could tell her. She said the chemical haze was three days old, that something to the east had burned clean and left this behind. I nearly walked into Lano before I caught what had stopped her.

There was a figure on the heap.

A raccoon, masked and ring-tailed, working a mound of failed castings with small clever hands. He sorted without hesitation - cracked gauge to one pile, length of conduit to another, a blackened fitting set aside and then picked up again. His hands moved without looking, the way hands move when they already know the answer.

Lano's growl was low. Not threat. Assessment.

And then something landed in me that I cannot name in waking terms. Not a memory but a flood of recognition so total it emptied me for a moment - this same careful sorter, these same quick hands, in a life that was not this one. The shape of him against a heap was not new. It had been true before, in some other version of the waste, and it arrived now like a fact that had simply been waiting for me to walk close enough to receive it.

He stopped sorting. He looked at me.

Something showed on my face. He set down what he was holding - a length of conduit, cracked at one end but whole along the run - and was quiet for a long moment. Then he nodded. Once. The way you nod to someone at a crossing when the light changes and you had both been waiting at the same corner without knowing it.

The Builder said nothing. Rurik sat.

What broke the silence was Lano, who had never stopped watching him. She circled one step sideways to put herself between him and the path. He looked at her. She looked back. He crouched, made himself smaller, went back to the conduit, turned it in his hands - and the line of her hackles eased by a fraction, not more.

He fell into step with us when we moved. Not beside Lano. Behind her, at a distance that said he understood the arrangement, and she tracked him with one ear the whole way.

The Weather Reader said the air would clear by nightfall. The Scavenger said nothing, but I saw him glance up at the haze and nod to himself, as though he had already concluded the same thing and was simply confirming the calculation.

Note

In Brackenlea's mist, I watched hands sort refuse with practiced ease. A flood of recognition surged, reconnecting me to a past life and a forgotten figure. Lano's unease simmered as we passed.
