Dream d1830-s: The Last Entry at Willowmoss
2026-06-20 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the fog had not lifted when I made the final entry in the book of readings. The ink dried slowly in the damp air. Around me, Willowmoss held its breath - the overgrown courtyard still, the old stones beaded with moisture, the ruined archway draped in new vine that had no memory of the builders who set the keystone.
The Caretaker came at first light, as she had both mornings, carrying a clay cup she pressed into my hands without asking whether I wanted it. She was a small woman who had outlasted every reason to leave. She watched me write and did not speak until I looked up.
"You'll put in the true parts," she said. Not a question.
"The damp," I told her. "The load-path on the east colonnade. The way the pressure held steady through the night even when the sky threatened."
She nodded as though that settled something she had been working out for years.
The Builder was already crouched at the base of the south wall, one palm flat against the stone, reading it a last time. She had spent two days finding what had been built to last and what had merely been built. She stood now and brushed her hands on her coat. "The foundation is good," she said, loud enough for the Caretaker to hear. "Whatever comes down will come down on its own terms, not from neglect."
The Caretaker received this the way a person receives news they already knew but needed confirmed by someone who had not simply lived with it.
Lano had been circling the courtyard since before the rest of us were properly awake. She nosed along the base of the archway, tail moving, and returned with a small flat stone in her mouth, which she set at the Caretaker's feet and then sat looking up. The Caretaker looked down at the stone a long time.
"Precioso," I said, and Lano's ears swung toward me.
The Weather Reader checked her barometer on the step and recorded the reading in her own log. "Pressure still holding," she said. "Road will be dry by mid-morning."
Rurik had been sitting at the gate since before I woke. He sat with his tail wrapped around his feet and his amber eyes on the road beyond, patient the way only cats and rivers are patient.
When the Caretaker said her goodbye it was brief - a hand briefly touching mine, a nod to each of us, a longer look at the stone Lano had left. She did not watch us go.
Rurik was first through the gate. The road waited, fog-draped and open. I pulled the book of readings closed and followed.
