Dream d1826-s: The Measured Pace

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the mist off the river had settled knee-high by first light, filling Brackenlea's main street to the window-sills, and in that soft grey layer the prints were impossible to miss.

Boots. Several pairs. The stride of people moving with purpose, not wandering. I crouched and traced the edges with two fingers. Recent - the mud walls still held their shape, no rain-blur, no heel-sink where the ground had time to recover. Days, not weeks. Someone was using this street regularly and late.

Rurik had found them before I did. He was sitting at the first set, amber eyes steady, tail wrapped around his feet. When I caught up, he flicked an ear toward the far end of the street where the mist thinned and the lane bent toward the river. Then he walked. We followed.

The Builder was already at the bend. She had her notebook out, studying the corner of a low structure - a shed, newly re-roofed, the timber still pale and unweathered. She ran a hand along the ridge. "That's good joinery," she said, without looking up. "Someone here knows their load-paths. This wasn't slapped together."

We heard the hammers before we cleared the last houses. Not the hollow afternoon knock of maintenance, but sharp, rhythmic work - people building toward a deadline. Voices called measurements. A second voice confirmed. A third laughed at something. The sounds went up into the mist and stayed there, absorbed.

The Weather Reader had gone ahead. I found her at the edge of the hamlet, where the ground opened into a flat strip of hard-packed earth. Stakes at regular intervals. A hanging target, cloth-faced, worn at the centre. She was tilting her barometer toward the morning light.

"Pressure's been dropping since last night," she said. "Not weather coming - something active. This place is running warm." She nodded at the target. "They're training. Or testing. Something they need to be precise about."

I wrote that down. Lano had moved to the nearest stake and was working it with her nose, then sat back on her haunches and watched me write. Her tail moved once.

We stood there a while, the four of us and Rurik, listening to the hammers and the measured voices coming from behind warm windows. Brackenlea was not sleeping. Whatever Brackenlea was building, it needed accuracy.

I wrote: footprints in fresh mud. New roof joints, sound. Late voices, counted paces. A place with work inside it.

That was the second day's reading. Not yet full. But the shape of the place was starting to come clear.
