Dream d1824-s: The Uncatalogued Pulse
2026-06-20 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road ran out of Umberfold in the late amber light that comes before storm, the village lamp-chain just visible behind us as a smear of gold on the low hills. Lano trotted at my heel, nose sweeping the verge, quieta a moment, tail still.
We walked and talked over Umberfold the way you talk over a place once the gate is behind you: the millrace the Builder had traced to its cracked collar, the three seasons of water-memory the Weather Reader had read from the pressure logs nailed inside the granary door, the woman who kept the lamp register and wrote every outage in a hand so careful you could see the grief in it. I had written her name in the book - not her real name, the name she used at the register. Lamp-Keeper. I would not forget her.
"The granary joint will hold another winter," the Builder said, not to anyone particularly. "Maybe two."
"She knew that," said the Weather Reader. "She wrote it in the log."
That was Umberfold. A place that had already read itself; we had only confirmed what it knew.
The road forked near a stand of ash and Rurik moved ahead without being asked, choosing the left branch, the one that climbed toward a notch in the ridge. Brackenlea would be beyond that notch. We had not seen it yet. The Weather Reader said the pressure had been dropping since midday and whatever came through the notch tonight would arrive fast.
We made camp on the verge where the ash roots had lifted the roadstones into a low natural wall. Lano settled near the fire but did not sleep. Her ears moved.
It was the Weather Reader who noticed first. She had the small receiver out - the instrument that reads the beacon network, the signal-wires that run between the lit nodes - and she stopped tuning it and held it level.
"This isn't a node I have charted," she said.
The Builder came to look. Rurik sat at the road's edge with his amber eyes on the dark notch in the ridge.
The signal was there in the receiver's needle: a pattern, repeating, not from Umberfold behind us, not from any beacon we had mapped. Origin unclear. The needle moved in a shape none of us recognized.
Lano rose from beside the fire. Her ears went flat against her skull. One short bark, aimed at the notch, at the dark where Brackenlea waited out of sight.
"We investigate," said the Builder.
"We sleep first," said the Weather Reader. "Then we investigate."
Neither was wrong. I copied the signal's shape into the book as close as I could trace it from the needle's movement, and left the page unfinished.
