Dream d1814-s: Tilt Before the Road

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Bridgekeeper was already at the gate when we came down through the morning lanes with our packs buckled and the book of readings under my arm, its last entry still damp. Rurik had gone ahead; he always goes ahead on departure days, marking the threshold, sitting beyond the gate's shadow as though to prove the road is real and waiting. Lano trotted at my heel, tail easy, nose working the bread-smoke that still leaked from the bakehouse chimneys.

The farewells were brief, as farewells between readers always are. The Bridgekeeper clasped my hand and said we had left the census in better order than we found it, and I said that was the only way to read a place. The Weather Reader was already watching the sky to the south, her hand around the barometer in that way she holds it when the needle is doing something it should not. "Dropping," she said to no one in particular, and I wrote it in the margin of the final entry because margin notes are sometimes more honest than the entry itself.

Then Lano stopped.

Her ears went flat. Not the slow flick of a new smell but the sudden pinning of something wrong, and then she gave one sharp bark, not at us but at the old storehouse on the east side of the square, the one the Builder had flagged on day two as the most interesting structure in Brackensquare because its underpinning was three eras deep: the original stone, the network-era concrete poured over it, the reclaimed timber threaded through both. A building that remembered too many owners. "Quieta," I said, but she did not move.

The sound that followed was not loud. A deep settling, like the square itself exhaling. The northeast corner of the storehouse, the one farthest from the door, tilted two hands'-width toward the road. A cable that had run from its eave to the lamp-post at the center of the square snapped and fell in a slow arc across the cobblestones.

"There it is," the Builder said quietly, and she was already moving, not toward the gate but back across the square, her eyes on the joint where the old stone met the network-era pour. The Bridgekeeper's face changed; something between recognition and grief passed across it.

Rurik came back through the gate without being called. He simply appeared at my side, amber eyes on the tilted corner, tail low.

The road was still there. The book was still under my arm. But the entry I had marked as final was not final yet.
