Dream d1807-s: Frost on the Root

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the town was familiar in the way a borrowed coat becomes yours by the fifth morning - the weight of it known, the worn places mapped. Grey light came up slow over Kestrelsquare's eastern wall, and the frost on the fence posts held a record of the night's breath. I opened the book of readings at the page where yesterday's notes ended and found I had more to add before I had even eaten.

The Builder had been out since before the light. I found her crouching at the junction of the market square and the north lane, pressing the heel of her hand against a cobblestone. Lano sat close beside her, nose low, reading whatever the cold ground gave her.

"This wasn't here two days ago," the Builder said when she heard me approach. She did not look up. "These ruts. They came in fast. Overnight work, or close to it."

I crouched beside her. The cart-tracks ran deep - laden carts, more than a few. They came in on every road into the square, which I had not noticed until I thought to count them.

The Weather Reader appeared at my shoulder with her smallest instrument, the one she calls a pocket barometer, held flat in her palm. "Pressure dropped twelve hours before those carts arrived," she said. "That isn't coincidence. Someone read the sky and moved."

Rurik sat on the step of the cooper's yard, watching the three of us deliberate in the cold. His amber eyes moved from the ruts to the rooftops and back. After a moment he rose and walked to the north lane's mouth, then stopped and looked back once - not urgency, just a note that there was more to see that way.

"Not yet," the Builder told him. "I need to understand the load first. Then we follow."

She pulled out her notebook and began a sketch of the rut pattern. I wrote down what she said aloud as she worked: depth at entrance, depth at center, the way the stones had shifted rather than cracked. Kestrelsquare had been built to take weight - but not quite this weight, not quite this fast.

From somewhere inside the cooper's yard came the ring of a hammer, slow and unhurried, the sound of someone working through a problem with their hands. It had started before we arrived. It had probably started before dawn.

Lano pushed her nose briefly against my knee - fría, the cold, the contact, the small animal certainty that we were here and not going anywhere yet - and then she went back to reading the stones.

We were not leaving tomorrow. We had one more day, and the root of the thing was only now coming visible.

Note

The Builder crouched beside the frost-covered fence, her hands pressed against the cold ground, as the Weather Reader and Rurik observed the sudden influx of carts into Kestrelsquare.
