Dream d1804-s: Stray Tools Before Storm
2026-06-18 17:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the amber came in low over Kestrelsquare's eastern wall and laid itself across the cobbles like a second skin. The storm wasn't here yet - the Weather Reader had said two hours, maybe three - but the town already felt it: banners drawn taut on their poles, a dog barking somewhere behind the tannery, and a single rope of garlic left unstrung in the middle of the market row, swinging in the front-wind.
We were properly walking the place for the first time, book open against my arm, the Builder three steps ahead with her head cocked, reading the joints where stone met stone. Rurik moved along the edge of the lane, marking the entrance to an alley with a slow pass of his flank, then sitting to watch something only he could see.
The Bridgekeeper met us at the inner crossing - a short bridge over the drainage channel that divided the market from the mill district. She carried a tallying stick notched in a way I didn't recognize and greeted us not by asking our business but by telling us hers: "Forty-two crossings yesterday, three loads of milled grain. Today will be fewer. Storm takes the appetite out of travel."
The Builder asked about the bridge stones. The Bridgekeeper shrugged and said the center two had settled but held. "They've held longer than I've held the post," she said, and there was pride in that without any argument. The Builder crouched to press a thumb against the joint. She nodded once, which was its own kind of approval.
The Miller was flour-dusted and unhurried, standing in the mill doorway watching the Weather Reader angle her barometer toward the sky. They spoke a kind of shorthand between them - pressure, direction, whether the clouds were high-water or dry-weather moving. I noted it in the book without writing either of their names.
The Clerk of the square found us at the corner where three lanes met. He kept a small ledger of his own - goods uncollected, tools left out against the charter. He made no complaint; he only showed me the list with the mild satisfaction of someone who enjoys having a list. A drawknife forgotten against a doorpost. A barrow wheel propped against the public well.
Lano sniffed the barrow wheel with great seriousness. "Seria," I said softly, and she looked up at me with equal gravity before padding on.
The storm hadn't broken by the time we'd covered the eastern quarter. The brass-colored light made rough stone look like something worth keeping. I wrote: orderly, mostly. A few seams to watch.

Note
Amber clouds loomed over Kestrelsquare, tension hanging in the air. Storms were coming, but the town felt it already. Tools lay forgotten, a reminder of life's impermanence.
