Dream d1801-s: The Book Closed at Nettlefall
2026-06-18 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the last lamp of Nettlefall was still burning when I pressed the book of readings shut.
The morning had not fully come. Blue dark hung over the settlement - that particular pre-dawn quality that made the lit windows look warmer than they were, small hearths broadcasting through ivy-webbed stone. I sat at the long table in the caretaker's outer hall and read back what we had written. Two days of reading. The pressure notes from the Weather Reader in her careful columns. The Builder's sketches of the western wall's load-path, the cracks that ran with the grain of the stone rather than against it. My own observations: the silence that came each afternoon at the fourth hour, the way the overgrown east garden still drained perfectly because someone had thought about slope when they laid the stones.
The Caretaker was there before I finished. She moved without ceremony, the way people do who have never left a place and therefore feel no need to announce themselves in it. She poured water from a clay pitcher. She did not ask if we were going.
"The east drainage," the Builder said, from where she stood by the door with her pack already shouldered. "The slope is two degrees. Whoever cut that grade knew they'd be gone before anyone thanked them."
The Caretaker almost smiled. "My grandmother's grandmother."
I wrote that down too. Final entry.
The Weather Reader came in from outside, her barometric case under her arm, cheeks flushed with the cold. "Pressure's lifting," she said. "Good day for the road."
Rurik appeared in the doorway as if he had heard this judgment and approved of it. He stood at the threshold and looked back at us with amber eyes, which was his way of saying that the road was ready when we were.
Lano padded to him, sat beside him, ears perked toward the gate, nose turned to whatever came from the direction of the trees. She had been restless since the lamps were lit. She knew.
We said our farewells to the Caretaker in few words. There is a particular brevity that is not curtness - it is the compression of everything that does not need to be said because it has already been read and recorded. She stood at the gate as we passed through. I looked back once.
The settlement sat in its blue overgrown quiet, one lamp still visible through the ivy. In the book, Nettlefall was no longer dark. That was what reading it truly had meant.
Rurik was already twenty paces down the road when I turned back. The rest of us followed. The gate did not close behind us. It was not that kind of place.
