Dream d1750-s: The Relay's Stutter

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road bent south before dawn and Harrowhollow came up through the fog like a smudge of amber.

The hamlet sat in a shallow cup of land, a low ridge to the north cutting the wind. From half a kilometer out I counted four lit windows and a faint orange smear where the common hearth still banked. Rurik walked ahead, tail low, reading the approach. A rake had been left against a fence post, and a bucket sat in the lane at an angle that said someone had set it down and not come back. Small things. The Weather Reader noted the air pressure from her belt instruments without being asked.

"Settlement pressure is soft," she said, not to anyone specific. "Has been for a few days, I think. You can feel it in the ground."

The Builder said nothing, but her eyes moved along the roofline as we came through what passed for a gate: two posts and a rope, one post leaning. She would have more to say tomorrow.

We found the inn without trouble. The keeper was a compact woman who offered soup and did not ask questions, which suited us. Lano explored the threshold room twice before settling near the fire, nose working the unfamiliar air. Rurik sat in the doorway a long while. When he finally crossed the threshold he touched his nose to the stone floor once, low and deliberate, then came to sit beside me.

I opened the book of readings to a clean page and wrote: Harrowhollow. Day one. Arrival only.

That was when the signal stuttered.

I heard it before I understood it - a high whine from the relay cabinet on the wall, the kind of box that carries beacon traffic between settlements. The keeper looked up sharply. The cabinet clicked and hissed and then the indicator lamp went red and cycled through a pattern I did not recognize.

The Weather Reader crossed to it in three steps. "Vaya," she said softly, reading the display. "Not weak. Scrambled. The encoding is wrong at the source."

Lano was on her feet before the last word landed. Ears flat, body low, a bark that came out tight and clipped. She put herself between us and the cabinet and held there.

The keeper said the relay had been fine at sunset. The Builder was already pulling the panel cover loose - not to fix it, not yet, just to see.

I wrote: Signal anomaly at arrival. Corruption in the relay fabric. The reading proper begins tomorrow, but something is already asking to be read tonight.

Outside, the fog settled lower over Harrowhollow. The hearth lit the window amber. The relay lamp cycled its wrong pattern in silence.
