Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1693-s: Reluctant Threshold
2026-06-10 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Woodworker's oscillator caught it first.
We were deep in Movement 4, the filter bank half-assembled on the bench, when the tone shifted - not broken, just wrong in the way a tuned string goes wrong when humidity changes overnight. The Woodworker set down a capacitor and listened with his whole body, the way craftsmen do when they are deciding whether the sound is the material or the tool.
"Something is riding the signal," the Listener said. She had been sitting near the window, and now she stood very still, head tilted, the way you stand in a room where the furniture has moved slightly but you cannot say which piece.
The Weather Reader's barometer hung on the workshop wall. I watched its needle drift without any cloud cause, without any wind. She pulled it from the hook and held it close to her chest, protective, and that gesture told me more than the reading.
The Builder was already in the infrastructure layer. He had a small console unfurled across the corner of the workbench, relay topology scrolling across it in grid lines. Five stations amber, two more flagging. I watched him trace the upstream architecture with one finger and stop.
"There's a node eating," he said. That was the whole diagnosis.
Lano sat at my feet with his nose working the air, not toward the forest, not toward the path - toward the console, toward the numbers. His ears stayed up.
The Dreamer had not moved from the window. He had come in from the clearing an hour before the instruments spiked, camera loose in one hand, and he had not raised it since. He was looking at the relay topology on the Builder's console. Not studying it. Just watching the amber stations like a man who recognizes a view he has seen from a different angle.
"The settlement beacons are dimming," the Builder said. "Not failing. Dimming."
The Philosopher said, "There is a kind of problem that looks like patience from a distance."
Nobody laughed, but the Student wrote it down.
The Woodworker and the Eye came in from the garden together. A look moved between them, the short kind that long partnership makes possible. The Eye set a jar of dried specimens on the shelf in a deliberate way, like a thing being put in order before a journey.
We did not need to say it. The workshop had been a long road's end. Now it was a waypoint.
I picked up my pack. Lano was already at the door.
The Dreamer pulled the camera from the strap and settled it in his bag without a photograph of any of it. I noticed. I did not say so.
