Dream d1689-s: Five Relays

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the workshop clearing sat in afternoon light that felt borrowed, the kind that hasn't decided whether to stay. Sawdust layered the footpath in a fine drift, and Lano's paws left small prints as she trotted ahead. The Woodworker stood at his bench shaping a resonator box with a draw knife, and the clean scrape of edge against grain had been part of the air for most of the last hour.

I was watching the Dreamer watch the workshop.

He stood at the edge of the clearing with his camera in both hands, but he hadn't raised it. Not once since we arrived. The strap hung loose. He was looking at something north of the treeline, past anything I could name.

The Weather Reader found me beside the supply packs. "Something's moving in the system," she said, and tapped the barometer face. The needle sat below the morning reading, not dramatically but steadily, with no front to account for it.

Before I could answer, the Builder's voice carried from the far side of the workshop, flat and careful: "Come see this."

We gathered around her relay map, the one she'd kept running since the Grain Thread. Forty-three conduit nodes spread across the deep architecture. Three had gone amber. Then, while we watched, a fourth.

"That upstream node," she said. "Traffic in. Traffic in. Nothing out. Intake without decision, and it's been going long enough that the downstream relays started compensating." A pause. "Were compensating."

The Philosopher leaned close. "And now?"

"Now they're dropping traffic."

From inside the workshop, the Woodworker's synthesizer hummed. Then a frequency arrived that had no business in analog circuitry, brief and wrong and gone.

The Listener went very still. Lano turned toward the workshop door, ears up, nose working the air.

The Woodworker appeared in the doorway. He looked at the display, then at each of us in turn. "The Eye and I don't travel," he said. "We tend what grows here."

I looked back at the Dreamer.

He hadn't moved. Still facing north, camera loose in both hands, still not raised. The Philosopher touched his shoulder and asked something quiet. He shook his head once and didn't answer.

The fifth relay went amber.

We started packing.
