Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1685-s: A Tremor in the Wood
2026-06-10 08:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Woodworker's oscillator caught it before any of us did.
The workshop had been warm all morning - sawdust settling on the windowsills, cedar resin still in the air from Movement 4's latest session. The oscillator sat on the long bench at the far wall, its chassis half-open, a tangle of hand-wound coils emerging from a cabinet carved from pine. The Woodworker had spent the last several days routing signal through chambers he'd shaped himself - sound as architecture, he kept saying. Not metaphor. Literal.
Then the oscillator began producing a tone in a register it wasn't designed to reach.
Not loud. A low shudder, felt in the chest before the ears. The Woodworker set down his plane and stood with his head at a slight angle, listening the way you listen to a language you nearly understand.
"That's not from this instrument," he said.
The Weather Reader had her hand on her barometer before he finished. She turned the calibration ring once, paused, turned it again. "No front incoming. No pressure cause for this."
The Builder had moved to his diagnostic pack before she finished talking. He opened the panel, said nothing for a beat, then spoke without alarm. "Relay stations three and seven have gone amber. Station nine is flickering. Upstream node pulling intake from the western relay chain - no echo, no decisions, no return. Just consumption."
The Philosopher set her cup down carefully. "A closed loop."
"Not a loop," the Builder said. "Nothing comes back out."
I looked across the workshop. The Dreamer was standing near the oscillator, watching the output needle drift through patterns that had no source in the room. He raised his camera to his eye - I saw the frame of it - and then lowered it again without pressing. He kept watching the needle.
The Woodworker walked to the doorway. Outside, the Eye was in her shadow garden, pressing a late specimen between two wide boards. She looked up.
"The relay structure is degrading," I said. "We need to move."
The Woodworker nodded once. "This space holds itself. Go hold yours."
The Eye raised a hand from the garden - not a wave, a closing of accounts - and bent back to her work.
Lano was already at the clearing's edge, nose pointed north, waiting.
The Dreamer picked up his pack. He picked up his camera but didn't sling it - held it down at his side like something he hadn't decided about yet - and walked out into the gray clearing without shooting anything.
I followed without asking why.

Patterns (1)
- Phase 21 - The Woodworker's Workshop: Dream 1685 in the consolidation arc. 0 days until Stage IX deadline. Sustained rhythm of observation and documentation.
