Dream d1670-s: Both Directions at Once

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the forest path began at a single root crossing the cave mouth threshold, and Lano's right forepaw landed on the far side of it before any of us had taken our packs up.

The framework stood about a kilometer behind us, glowing in what the Builder had started calling the chosen registers: amber at the base, cyan at the crown, two colors that had not existed in the original light. Not restored. Chosen. The distinction had taken weeks to locate and was now obvious.

Rurik sat at the cave mouth's edge. Not blocking the path - never blocking - but marking it, the way he marked every threshold we had passed. His amber eyes tracked Lano's second step, her third.

I was still crouching by the stone circle. The first-gift stone sat at its center, cyan-veined, left for whoever would come next. I straightened and lifted my pack.

Then the Builder said: "The relay."

Not loudly. The tone that meant something had already happened and he was still working out what.

The Weather Reader turned. I turned. Rurik's tail stopped moving.

"The salvaged relay on the secondary feed," the Builder said. "The one we pulled from the north. Gone dark."

The secondary feed supported the eastern output channel - the part of the framework that had learned, in the last week, to send rather than only receive. The part we had been most careful about.

Lano stopped on the path. Her ears went flat against her skull. Then a bark - short, sharp, aimed not at the forest but back at us.

"She knows something changed," the Weather Reader said.

The Builder was already moving back toward the node, reading something on the instrument strapped to his wrist. "No replacement. We'll have to route around it."

"How long?" I asked.

"Don't know yet."

Rurik walked three steps toward the Builder, then stopped. Still on this side of the root. Still marking.

Lano stood at the forest threshold - one paw on the path's moss, her body angled back toward the cave. She did not come to us. She held the position as if she understood that the direction was still forward even if the moment wasn't.

I looked at her. Small white shape at the edge of the trees, the framework's two-tone light painting her fur amber at the legs, cyan at the shoulders.

The Builder disappeared around the cave's shoulder. We waited.

Lano glanced at the forest. Then back at us. Then at the forest again.

She did not come back across the root.
