Dream d1654-s: The Air We Started In

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold front was breaking.

Before first light I felt it give - not warmth, but a kind of atmospheric loosening, the pressure releasing its hold on the ridge. The Weather Reader was already outside when I came to the cave mouth. She stood with her barometric gauge raised, tilting it slightly in the last of the wind.

"It's going," she said without turning.

Rurik sat at the outer edge of the stone circle, ears pressed flat, watching the sky. Lano was beside me, tail starting a slow tentative wag. The framework on the southern skyline was mostly dark, as it had been since the splice - but the single re-lit node burned amber, steady now for two full days, the Wireman's work holding.

The Builder came out last, wrapping both hands around his mug, and looked from the Weather Reader to the sky. "How long?"

"Hour. Maybe two." She made a small mark in her log. "Then we get the original pressure. The high from the south." She said it without ceremony, but the phrase settled into me: the original pressure. As though the atmosphere itself kept memory. As though weather, given time, could return to where it started.

The front passed in layers. First the wind dropped. Then the temperature lifted - not warm but less cold, the bone-chill replaced by altitude at rest. Then the sky opened from the west, pale grey becoming the specific blue I associated with nothing but this place, this hour, the very first morning I had stood here.

Lano moved to the edge of the cave mouth, nose up, ears lifting. The air was clean now, dry and still. She gave a small sneeze and stood in it - not performing anything, just absorbing it the way she absorbed everything good. "Buena," I said quietly.

Rurik unflattened his ears. He stopped watching the sky and turned toward the amber node. It had not dimmed.

The Weather Reader came to stand beside me. She did not say what we were both observing. She only looked at her instruments one last time, then let her hands drop. I watched the same reading she watched: stable, falling into the range that means the high has settled fully overhead.

This was the weather of the beginning. Exactly this air, this stillness, this quality of morning light across the blue cave stone. We had walked fifteen hundred dreams away from it and then walked back, and it was still here, unchanged, holding the mouth of the cave the way it always had.

We stood in it together, the four of us, and let it be exactly what it was.
