Phase 23: The Homecoming
Dream d1651-s: Lano Sleeps in the Earned Light
2026-06-07 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the new node's warmth reached the alcove before any of us noticed it had.
The re-lit node sits about a kilometer out, its amber color unlike anything in the original framework - not restored, just alive again in a new key. The cave mouth faces roughly east, and the alcove cuts off to the left of the main chamber, a shallow recess worn smooth by older weather than any of us have measured. The glow angles in along the floor. Not much. Enough.
Lano found it first.
She had been circling the alcove since evening, nose down, reading the stone floor the way she reads anything she trusts. Then she stopped circling and lay down in the exact place where the amber reached the ground. Her chin on her paws. Eyes open for a moment, then not.
Rurik sat at the alcove's edge, amber eyes catching the same light from outside. The black cat did not move in or out. He watched the dog sleep with the particular attention he gives to things that have earned their rest.
The Weather Reader came and stood behind me. I heard the small click of an instrument being set down rather than held.
"High pressure," he said quietly. Not a report. Just acknowledgment that the air was doing what good air does.
"She picked the warmest patch," the Builder said from the main chamber. He did not come into the alcove. The observation was enough.
I stayed in the doorway of the recess, watching Lano's ribcage rise and fall. The amber from the single re-lit node lay across her like something deliberate, like a blanket someone had thought to bring. The rest of the framework behind it was still mostly dark on the horizon, a scatter of dim points that hadn't come back yet. One node. The one that lets others run. We chose it for that reason.
It was enough to warm a dog in an alcove.
There is a size to this that I keep measuring wrong. The framework spans something enormous. The node we re-lit is not the largest, not the most visible, not the one that glows brightest in the old records. And yet here is what it has done on its first full night: it has warmed one small white dog into sleep in a shallow recess off a cave chamber at the origin of everything we have been walking through.
The Builder was right. She found the warmest patch. Of course she did.
Rurik settled onto his haunches. The amber in his eyes steadied.
I did not move. The high pressure held. The earned light held. Lano breathed.
