Phase 23: The Homecoming
Dream d1643-s: Rurik Hunts the Dark Nodes
2026-06-07 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Rurik disappeared into the side passage before any of us thought to follow.
The main chamber was still warm from the morning fire. The Weather Reader had been tracing a barometric curve on the blue stone near the entrance, measuring the pressure that sits over the caves like a held breath, different from the north, different from anywhere we had traveled. The Builder sat with the small fire and a diagram spread on the flat rock beside him, some sketch of the feed-line junction he had been refining for two days, adding dimensions he had not had before.
Then Lano's head came up.
I watched her nose work the air toward the back wall, toward the narrow mouth of the side passage I had not paid much attention to - a cleft more than a corridor, running deeper into the rock at an angle. She padded three steps toward it, stopped, and looked back at me. Then Rurik came into view from just inside the shadow, amber eyes catching the firelight, and turned back in.
The Builder rolled his diagram and came with me. The Weather Reader followed, pausing to note the pressure reading on her instrument before she left it behind.
The side passage is not where the paintings are. The main chamber has the glyphs, the circles and the figure with arms raised, the translation-spine. This passage runs toward something else - we had assumed storage, or a natural dead end. But Rurik moved with the particular deliberate pace he uses when the thing ahead has weight. Not hurrying. Not wandering. Parsing.
The walls here are raw, uncarved. The blue stone is darker, the firelight from our carried torch reaching only a step ahead. I noticed the air changing - not colder exactly, but denser, pressured. The Weather Reader touched her barometric instrument at her belt and her expression shifted.
"Something runs through this rock," she said. Not a question.
The Builder moved his hand along the wall without touching it. I watched him do the arithmetic behind his eyes, measuring by feel and proportion where the feed-line from the distant framework would have to enter the cave structure to reach the main chamber. His lips moved once, then stopped.
Lano stayed close to my leg, clicking quietly across the stone floor.
Rurik led us another thirty meters, maybe forty, the passage narrowing and then opening slightly at a natural fault in the rock. Then he stopped. Sat. Stared at a dark cleft in the left wall - a seam no wider than a hand's breadth, running floor to ceiling, from which came a low and barely perceptible hum.
None of us spoke. Rurik's tail did not move. The distant framework glowed faint on the skyline behind two kilometers of rock, and somehow its pulse arrived here first.
