Dream d1624-s: The Shutter Speaks

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Student appeared at the mouth of our alcove near dusk, holding something against their chest.

The framework's glow at the far edge of the plateau had dimmed through the afternoon - not dark, but reduced, the way a lamp burns when the oil runs low. We had been working quietly, cross-referencing the weather-pattern glyphs with the Builder's notes on the feed-junction geometry. Lano was curled near the hearth stones, nose tucked under her tail, watching the Student the moment they stepped into the firelight.

The Student set the object on the flat ledge we had been using as a table. It was small - a carved replica no larger than a fist, made from pale stone not native to this cave. They had reconstructed the node's feed-junction from memory and study, rendered in physical form: the intake channels, the distribution ring, the single output arm. Every proportion correct. The Builder leaned forward, said nothing for a long moment, then said: "You made it from the sketch."

"From the sketch, and from what I measured before we left," the Student said. "I wanted to hold the shape of it."

The air in the alcove was still. High pressure had settled over the cave region through the day, and the night coming on was clear - stars beginning to show above the cave mouth's upper lip. No wind. The framework on the southern skyline held its diminished glow, neither dimming further nor recovering.

The Dreamer had been sitting to the left of the alcove entrance, camera bag closed at his feet, looking at the wall where the arms-raised figure stood. He had not turned when the Student arrived. Now he did.

He looked at the carved replica on the ledge. He looked at the Student's face. Then, without a word, he reached down and opened the bag.

The Student watched him. We all did.

He raised the camera. One frame. The shutter clicked once in the alcove silence, and the sound was very clean.

The Student exhaled slowly - not relief exactly, but something in that neighborhood. They picked up the replica and wrapped it in cloth. "I'll take it back with me," they said. "You'll finish the reading without me."

It was not a question. The Builder walked them to the alcove entrance, and I heard footsteps fade down the stone passage toward the cave mouth.

Lano padded to the ledge where the object had rested and sniffed the empty surface. The framework light on the skyline held at its reduced level, patient.

The Dreamer set the camera on his knee. He did not put it away.
