Dream d1622-s: The Sketch He Keeps

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Builder found the glyph before any of us pointed it out. He had been moving along the lower section of the wall, firelight low, shadow filling the carvings, when he stopped and pressed two fingers into a groove and did not move.

Rurik was already there. The black cat sat at the base of the wall directly beneath the marking, as if he had been waiting for the Builder to catch up.

The glyph was not large - shoulder height, no wider than a man's forearm span. But the carving was deep. Two interlocking shapes, one curved, one straight, fitted into each other with a notch and a shoulder that locked under load. Not decorative. Structural. The kind of connection that holds when pressure runs perpendicular, when weight tries to pull apart what is joined.

The Builder said nothing. He took out his notebook - worn leather, soft cover - and began to copy it. Not quickly. He measured the proportions with his thumb against the wall, checked the angle of the notch three times.

The Weather Reader moved up beside me. "The same principle as the support arch," he said, low and certain. "They already knew the load would be uneven."

I had not thought of that. Looking at the glyph again, I saw it. One element was thicker on the receiving side. The carvers had accounted for asymmetric force. Whoever built these caves knew which direction the weight would come from and built the joint to answer it.

Lano sat near my feet, quieta, watching the Builder work. Her nose touched the base of the wall once, then she settled.

The Dreamer stood farther back than usual. I noticed him peripherally: he was not looking toward the entrance, not looking north. He was watching the Builder's hand move across the page. I did not remark on it.

The distant framework's glow was uneven tonight - not the steady warmth we had first walked toward when we arrived. It had been dimming in patches, irregular, like a signal going unanswered in sections. Some evenings the glow behind the ridge held its hue. Tonight it wavered.

The Builder did not look up until the sketch was complete. He held the page beside the wall, comparing. Made one correction - the shoulder angle, a degree or two shallower than he had drawn it. Then he folded the paper once and slid it into his jacket pocket.

"They got it right the first time," he said.

No one argued with that.
