Dream d1598-s: The Shape He Carries

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we had moved the fire closer to the west wall so the light could reach the full height of the figure.

The carving was old - older than any instrument we carried. A human shape, arms raised, palms open, head tilted back. The Weather Reader said it might be supplication. The Builder said it might be receiving. Neither word felt wrong.

The Dreamer had been quiet all morning, sitting on a flat stone at an angle to the rest of us, camera bag closed beside him. When I pointed to the glyph and began to read it aloud - the raised arms, the posture of giving back, or of being filled - he stood without speaking. He walked to the wall. He stood close enough to press a fingertip to the stone, though he did not touch it.

Rurik watched from a ledge above, amber eyes moving between the Dreamer and the carving.

The figure had its arms at the same angle as a person receiving rain. Or surrendering. Or simply holding open space in the air.

The Dreamer did not copy the posture. He stood slightly turned, shoulders forward, as though resisting something he had already recognized.

Lano's ears went flat before any of us heard it.

She barked once - short and sharp, not at the wall. The sound came from behind us, from the equipment cache near the hearth stones. A thin thread of smoke. Then a smell: hot copper, overcooked resin. The Builder was moving before I finished turning.

The junction relay. It had seemed solid - salvaged from the northern cache, installed and tested twice. Now the casing had cracked, the contact panel glassy and dark. The feed-line monitoring went silent. The small display that had been reading a steady pulse from the framework's direction showed nothing.

"Replacement?" the Weather Reader asked.

The Builder crouched and did not answer immediately. He turned the burnt piece in his hands. "No. Same gauge doesn't exist here."

"Improvise?"

"Working on it."

The framework's distant glow was still visible through the cave mouth - steady, unchanged - but we had just lost the only instrument that told us what it was actually doing. The reading was now our eyes and nothing else.

Lano paced between the cache and the wall, nose low, ears still flat.

I turned back. The Dreamer had not moved. He was still at the west wall, still facing the carved figure, and I could not tell from his posture whether he had heard any of it. His eyes had not left the raised arms in the stone.
