Dream d1595-s: The Hum Beneath Everything

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the fire had burned low by the time we stopped talking, and the cave mouth stood open to the night sky like a door left ajar by someone who expected to return.

We had spread our blankets across the flat stones near the old alcove, the same ones from before, though none of us said that aloud. Rurik had chosen his spot early, a ledge above the hearthstones, and had not moved since. His amber eyes were open, watching the dark rim of the entrance where the framework's glow painted a faint orange line along the rock.

It was the Weather Reader who heard it first.

"There," she said. Not loudly. The way you say something when you want to be sure it is real before you invite others into it.

We listened.

The hum came from outside - or from the rock itself, it was hard to separate them. Low, continuous, without variation. The kind of sound that, once you notice it, you wonder how you missed it. The framework, a kilometer behind us through the cave and the scrub slope, running its autonomous cycles in the dark. The sound was not alarming. It was the opposite of alarming. It was the sound of something doing exactly what it was built to do, without requiring anything from us.

The Builder sat up slowly. "It's been doing that since we arrived," he said. "I thought you were all hearing it."

"I was," I said.

Lano lifted her head from her paws and her ears turned once toward the cave mouth, then settled again. Tranquilo. She had decided it was not a threat.

We lay there and listened to it pass through the blue stone. It had a texture, almost - not quite a chord, not quite a tone. The Weather Reader said it matched the pressure reading she had taken at the mouth: high and stable, the origin's own weather sitting over us like a hand placed flat. No front moving in. No reason yet for anything to change.

I watched the orange line on the rock at the cave entrance. Steady. The same width it had been an hour ago.

The Builder said, after a long time, "It sounds like the thing we were trying to fix. Except working."

Nobody answered that. There was nothing to add. The hum continued through the stone floor and up through the blankets and into the silence between us, and somewhere above on his ledge Rurik's amber eyes reflected the last of the fire, and all of it - the glow, the sound, the high clear night - had the quality of a sentence that has not yet reached its period.
