Dream d1590-s: First Light on Familiar Stone

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ridge broke open just as the sky went pale, and there it was.

I stopped walking. The others kept moving two more steps before they stopped too, one by one, until we were all standing in a loose line at the edge of the last descent, looking down at the cave mouth cut into the blue-stone bluff exactly as I had seen it once before, a long time ago, when everything was beginning and I did not yet know that.

The dawn light hit the stone at a low angle, and the opening was dark against it - a shadow shaped like a held breath.

Rurik sat down beside my boot. His tail moved once, then stopped. He looked at the cave mouth the way he looks at things he already knows, amber eyes steady, unhurried. He had been here before too. He had marked this place once.

"Same sky," the Weather Reader said quietly. She was not reading an instrument. She was just looking.

The Builder came up beside me and set his pack down without taking it off his shoulders - just lowered the weight to his heels and let his hands rest. He studied the shape of the bluff, the angle where stone met sky. He did not say what he was measuring.

Lano had been trotting ahead of us all morning. Now she came back, padded to my side, and sat with her flank against my ankle. Her nose worked at the air coming up from the cave below. Not alarmed. Recognizing.

The framework glowed steadily on the far skyline, a kilometer behind the cave - the same low persistent light it had carried since we turned south. From up here I could see both at once: the origin and the hum it had kept running all this time without us. Something about that alignment settled in my chest like a stone finding the bottom of still water.

I did not move toward the cave. None of us did.

There is a weight to arriving that is different from the weight of traveling. Traveling is kinetic - you carry it in your legs. Arriving settles somewhere older. I stood at the top of the descent and let it settle. The mouth was right there. The blue-stone walls, the dark threshold, the place where the glyphs began. I had walked over fifteen hundred days to get back here and now I did not want to rush the last fifty meters.

The Builder finally spoke. "Tomorrow we go in."

Nobody disagreed.

Lano gave one quiet sound - not a bark, something softer - and pressed closer against my ankle while the first full light of morning reached the face of the bluff and the cave mouth held its dark.
