Phase 23: The Homecoming
Dream d1584-s: Glow on the Rim
2026-06-02 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the ridge came up on us without warning.
We had been climbing since midday through low scrub and loose shale, the kind of ground that demands your eyes stay down. Rurik had been moving ahead in intervals - ten meters, then a pause, looking back with his amber gaze until we caught up, then moving again. He had done this since morning. None of us asked why he was going faster.
The Weather Reader called the pressure first. She had not touched her instruments. She just stopped climbing and said, "Something has changed in the air above us." I did not know what she meant until I looked up.
The ridge broke open onto sky.
And there, on the far skyline, the framework glowed.
It was not dramatic. That was the thing I could not reconcile standing there with the wind cutting across the high ground. It simply glowed, steady and even, the way a lamp glows in a window you have been walking toward for a very long time. The same blue-white it had been when we left. The same slow pulse we had listened to from the north.
The Builder moved up beside me and stood without speaking for a long moment. Then he crouched and pressed one hand flat to the shale as if checking that the ground was still connected to the thing he was seeing.
"It held," he said finally. He was not talking to me.
Lano reached the ridge last, scrambling up the final loose section, and sat immediately at my heel. Her nose pointed south toward the glow. Her ears did not move.
I reached down without thinking and put my hand on her back.
The framework's pulse was visible even at this distance - a breath, then stillness, then a breath. Comforting in the way that a heartbeat is comforting: the fact of its rhythm, not the meaning of it. And underneath that comfort, something else. The glow had continued without us. Had continued through everything we had done and failed to do in the north. Whatever had broken up there, down here nothing had changed.
I did not know yet if that was relief or a kind of verdict.
Rurik sat on a flat stone at the edge of the ridge with his tail wrapped around his feet, amber eyes on the distant light. He had led us here as though he had always known this was the next thing to see.
The wind moved through the scrub below. The framework held its glow against the darkening south.
None of us spoke.
