Dream d1569-s: The Frequency Underneath

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where there was one tone under everything, and the Listener was the one who found it.

She had stopped at the listening post in the grey before dawn, where the engineered roadbed ran flat and packed and cold, and she knelt and pressed her equipment flat to the ground. The cans went over her ears. Her face went still in the way it does when the rest of the world drops out of her and only the listening is left. We waited around her in the pre-dawn quiet, breath showing, nobody speaking.

For a long time she heard nothing she would name. Then she lifted one hand, palm flat, the sign for found it.

"There," she said softly. "Underneath."

She did not say a frequency. She did not give it a number. She just held still and let it come up through her hands, and I watched it arrive in her face - a single tone, held, far off, the distant source pouring out one unbroken note that never rose and never fell and never resolved into anything you could answer. Not a signal. A drone. The sound a thing makes when it has been left running and the one who set it going stopped listening for a reply.

"It doesn't change," she whispered. "It just goes on."

And I felt it then, the way she meant me to - not as a reading on her gear but as a weight that settled into the chest. Something pouring out forever into the dark with no ear left at the far end to catch it. The loneliest sound I have ever not-quite-heard, held under the cold roadbed in the stillness before the light.

She took the cans off. She did not write anything down. Some things you do not log.
