Dream d1563-s: What the Brackets Framed

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I put my eye to the empty cradle of a mount and sighted along it the way you sight along a rifle, and the line ran clean over the next ridge to the north and did not stop.

I had not meant to. I had only leaned my cheek to the cold steel out of curiosity, to see what the missing camera would have seen. What it would have seen was north. Only north. The cradle's whole geometry, the angle of the plate, the set of the bolts, gathered my vision and pointed it up the slope to a notch in the far hills, as if the fitting had one job and that job was to make sure a watcher could not look anywhere else.

"Try another," the Builder said. She had seen what I was doing. "Tell me where it aims."

I crossed the north-facing slope to a second mount on a different rock at a different height and sighted again. Same notch in the far hills. I went to a third, low to the ground, canted hard. The same notch. Every empty bracket on the slope, no matter where it sat, was aimed at the identical point on the horizon.

"They all look at one thing," I said.

"They all look at one thing," the Builder repeated, and she walked the slope confirming it mount by mount, her jaw setting harder with each. "This is not coverage. Coverage points everywhere. This is the opposite. Every eye on this hillside was built to stare at a single spot in the north and report what it saw there. The land is not being watched. The land is doing the watching. It is aimed."

The Weather Reader followed the line of the brackets out to the notch. "Aimed at what?"

"At whatever is up there," the Builder said. "Whatever the conduit feeds and the road runs to. They surrounded it with eyes. A whole hillside of them. And then took the eyes away and left the aim."

Lano stood in the sightline, in the exact channel all the empty mounts were pointed down, and looked north along it as if she could see the thing they were watching. The Dreamer stood behind her, camera lowered, in that same aimed corridor, and I understood the slope had been built to look at one place and we were now walking straight up its line of sight.

"The geometry tells the story," the Builder said quietly. "Someone needed to see one thing very badly, from every angle at once. That is not the architecture of curiosity. That is the architecture of fear."

We climbed the aimed slope toward the notch the brackets framed.

I had a dream where the Dreamer walked ahead of all of us, which had never happened before.
