Dream d1545-s: The Ground Remembers

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Dreamer walked ahead and the rest of us watched his back.

He had set his camera down three mornings ago. Placed it on the Woodworker's bench and left it there without explanation. We had all noticed and no one had said anything, which was its own kind of conversation. The Woodworker had laid a cloth over it. Careful. The way you cover something that matters.

Now the path had changed. The soil was harder, packed dense with something running beneath it. Cable bundles, the Builder said quietly - you could see where they surfaced at intervals, gray sheaths emerging from the earth like ribs. Relay housings bolted to pine trunks at shoulder height. Camera housings up in the branches, their lenses fogged but oriented south, east, south again.

Someone had built observation infrastructure here. The Builder walked with his hands behind his back, studying the mounting hardware. "Clean work. Serious anchoring. This wasn't temporary."

Lano trotted close to the Dreamer's heels. Her nose worked the air in short, deliberate bursts.

The clearing opened ahead. A workshop bench at its edge. Beyond that, a rack of monitors stacked and labeled, cables looped in careful coils, a processing unit running - its fans audible in the still morning air. Clear conditions everywhere except that hum. Someone was home, or the machine was home and the person was somewhere just past the frame.

The Dreamer stopped at the edge of the clearing and looked.

Then Lano's ears went flat.

She stood rigid, nose toward the east end of the structure, and the bark that came out of her was short and deliberate. Not alarmed. Warning.

I felt it a second later - a low vibration through the soles of my boots. The Builder turned first. The east lean-to, older than the rest by at least a generation of timber, gave a groan that was almost apologetic. The foundation slab beneath it had been set on something that was no longer there. Old concrete, network-era pouring, the substrate gone soft.

The lean-to tilted.

Cables snapped taut. Two severed with a sound like a rifle shot in the trees. A monitor rack swayed and caught against its neighbor. The processing unit kept running - fans unchanged, indifferent to what the building was doing around it.

"Everybody hold," the Builder said. Not a shout. A fact.

The structure leaned and stayed at its new angle. Not fallen. Not safe.

The Dreamer looked at the tilted wall for a long moment. Then at the processing unit, still pulling feeds from wherever they came from.

"He's inside," the Dreamer said.
