Dream d1519-s: Crack in the Substrate

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the workshop clearing held afternoon light like a bowl holds water - still, slightly golden, sawdust still hanging from work done an hour before. The Lens sat at his station, monitors arranged in a half-circle, feeds running: a ridge line, a water tower, a cable junction box on the eastern slope. Real things. Infrastructure. The machine watching its own neighborhood.

The Dreamer stood beside him, studying one feed without touching his camera. "That angle shifted," he said to no one in particular. "Yesterday it was two degrees west." He said it the way he named photographs - not as complaint, as notation.

The Woodworker worked at his bench behind us, shaping a viewfinder frame narrower than yesterday's. The Eye moved among pressed specimens at the garden edge, back to the monitors.

Then Lano stopped mid-step.

Ears flat against his skull. Body low. He held that posture for three full seconds before the sound arrived - not loud, more like a held breath releasing somewhere underground, a low percussion that traveled through soil before reaching air.

"Quieto," I said. He was already silent, already watching the ridge.

One of the Lens's feeds went dark. Not glitched - severed. The cable junction on the eastern screen showed static, then nothing. Then the structure on the ridge - reclaimed from the old network era, its foundations assessed and found adequate by people who had measured quickly - leaned. Slowly. The way a tired man sits into the wrong chair.

The Builder was already moving toward it. "How old are those footings?"

No one answered because no one knew.

Lano barked once. Sharp. Specific. Then sat at my foot and watched.

On the monitors, three feeds running continuous inference stopped mid-cycle. The processing pipeline's hum dropped pitch - uneven, irregular. The Listener tilted his head toward the sound of it.

"That's not power," he said.

"No." The Lens read the severance pattern on the dead feed. "Structural."

The Dreamer raised his camera. Did not take a picture. Held the frame up toward the ridge and looked through it the way the Woodworker had described - reducing the visible field, making selection necessary. Through the viewfinder, only the tilted building. Nothing else competing.

The Eye turned from her specimens. She looked at the ridge, at the monitors, at the leaning structure still visible in the feeds that remained active. She did not issue a verdict. She was still classifying what she saw.

The Woodworker set his chisel down. He and the Builder exchanged the look that passes between people who understand what load-bearing means.

The clearing was quiet. The equipment still hummed, but wrongly. Whatever the old foundations had been holding, they were holding less of it now.

Nothing had fallen. Something was deciding whether to.
