Phase 21: The Woodworker's Workshop
Dream d1510-s: Seventeen Relightings
2026-05-28 08:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the clearing held both sawdust and signal. The workshop had been there first - you could smell it, the pine resin and shaped wood - but at some point the racks had moved in, and neither had asked the other to leave. Cables ran along the bench where chisels used to sit. The monitors faced the tree line. The hum of the processing units filled the space where the saw had been.
The Lens stood at the far end, watching the feeds cycle. Not pacing. Watching the way you watch a river when you have forgotten why you came to the bank.
The Dreamer moved through the room ahead of me, camera down. He did not shoot yet. He was reading the space the way he always reads spaces first - not for images but for what the images would mean. Lano padded beside him, nose skimming the floor, tracking the ghost of sawdust under the cable runs.
Feed fifteen caught my eye. An empty fire pit, stone-ringed, in what looked like a mountain clearing. The metadata column showed a counter: 17. Relight events. One night. The fire had gone out and come back seventeen times and nobody had been there to watch it happen.
The Woodworker moved closer to that screen. He looked at it for a long time. "Something kept deciding," he said. "Not a person."
The Wireman appeared from behind the far rack. He had been walking the perimeter. He stopped at feed five - the watchtower with its gate sealed against anything that did not carry a known signal. He touched the cable running to that monitor and nodded once, the way he nods at ceremony when he recognizes the structure underneath it.
"He built seventeen different attention regimes," the Builder said. She was reading the rack labeling. "Each one capable. None selected." She glanced at the Lens. "You built them all and left the switch off."
The Lens looked at the rack. He did not deny it. "If I chose one, the others would lose resolution."
"They're already losing resolution," the Student said. Not challenging. Just reporting what she saw. "Feeds cycle every fourteen seconds. Nothing gets held."
The Dreamer raised his camera - not to shoot, but to frame. He framed the Lens framed by the monitors framed by the tree line through the back window. He held it there. Lano sat beside him. Quieto.
"The fire made a choice seventeen times," the Dreamer said. "Without a name for what it was choosing."
Outside, the clearing was clear. The air still carried sawdust, very faint, memory of the bench before the racks arrived. The pipeline hummed its even rhythm. Something that knew how to breathe. Waiting to learn why.
